Being a digital nomad gives people the freedom to work and travel almost anywhere, while experiencing new cultures and ways of life. This lifestyle opens amazing opportunities, but it can also unintentionally create a heavy environmental footprint.
From frequent flights to unsustainable lodging to single-use plastics, digital nomads often contribute to environmental challenges without realizing it. Even those who are aware may struggle to find clear, practical guidance tailored to their unique lifestyle.
An engaging digital learning experience titled “A Digital Nomad’s Guide to Sustainable Travel", built in Articulate Rise.
This experience includes 3 micro-learning modules focusing on transportation, lodging, and everyday living. Each course includes a scenario-based activity or knowledge check to reinforce comprehension.
This self-paced, interactive course equips nomads with practical strategies to minimize their environmental impact while still enjoying the freedom of location independence.
Savvy Start & Discovery
I conducted interviews with digital nomads to uncover needs, challenges, and existing knowledge gaps. I then identified common misconceptions (e.g., “eco-friendly travel is expensive” or “it’s too hard while moving often”). I also researched solutions from credible sustainability experts on best practices and realistic strategies
Action Map
In order to identify high-priority actions I began by determining the main goals of the training which is "Reduce the environmental footprint of digital nomads by equipping them with practical, sustainable travel habits that can be applied immediately." I then determined, from my research, the most important actions that need to be taken by learners in order to complete this goal. This include things like choosing lower-impact transportation options, booking eco-conscious accommodations, and minimizing digital carbon footprint while working remotely.
Design
Based on the action map, I determined it would be best to structure this course into the following 3 micro-learning modules:
A Digital Nomad's Guide to Sustainable Transportation – sustainable transport choices.
A Digital Nomad's Guide to Sustainable Lodging– eco-conscious accommodations.
A Digital Nomad's Guide to Everyday Living – reducing waste, mindful consumption, digital sustainability.
At this point I began building out my text-based storyboard for each module, focusing on the content and how to keep learners engaged.
I prioritized interactive scenarios that mirror real nomad decision-making (e.g., “You’re booking a flight—how can you reduce impact?”). This course relies heavily on adult learning principles: autonomy, problem-centered design, and real-world application.
During this phase I also mocked-up the look and feel of this course using Figma.
Development
I used Articulate Rise to build out my course into the three modules. These modules include interactive scenarios, checklists, and resources.
This course is currently being evaluated using Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels model. Learner knowledge and application are being tracked through in-module quizzes and scenario-based activities, while follow-up surveys will assess changes in behavior, intention, and long-term travel practices. This evaluation approach ensures a clear understanding of how well the course supports learning, inspires sustainable travel behaviors, and drives meaningful impact.
