Influenza Outbreak Video Scenario

The Challenge

In an online philosophy course, students needed an activity that encouraged meaningful interaction, critical thinking, and discussion. The challenge was to design an engaging activity that was short enough to maintain attention while also providing a fair way to assess student participation.

The Solution

I created a scenario-based video that introduced a thought-provoking philosophical situation. I wrote the script, worked with actors to bring the scenario to life, and produced the final video in Adobe Premiere. Students were asked to watch the video and then participate in an online discussion board, posting their own perspective and responding thoughtfully to at least two peers. This structure encouraged deeper engagement with the material, fostered peer-to-peer learning, and provided a clear, graded measure of participation.

The Results

Student feedback indicated that the scenario video was both engaging and thought-provoking, helping to spark meaningful dialogue in the online discussion board. Participation rates reached 98%, with students consistently posting their own perspectives and responding thoughtfully to peers. The graded structure supported accountability while fostering collaboration and deeper understanding of philosophical concepts.
